Dry weather has allowed speedy Western Bypass construction

Companion photos show new Western Bypass shortcut from Hudson Street to KY 61 southThe dry weather has been tough on crops, even with the teaser showers which came down today, Friday, June 5, 2007. But it has allowed extraordinary progress on Columbia's long awaited Western Bypass.

Comprehension of the lay of the land is becoming more apparent as the construction continues. New thought patterns are being hard wired into the minds of Adair Countians coming to grips with shortened distances and a smallened world.

Two photos which accompany this item illustrate how close Hudson Street at the Y is to new KY 61 via West Walker Road on the Hudson Street side/Westwood Drive on the KY 61 South side.

From a batch tower on West Walker Road/Westwood Drive landmarks beyond the Old Burkesville Road in one direction, and the cut north of Sherman and Sherman Wayne Burton's auto salvage yard.

The Western Bypass: from a midpoint batcher

2007-06-08 - Photo By Ed Waggener.
From thiis road construction batch tower on the Western Bypass on West Walker Road/Westwood Drive, the white fences and, faintly, the home of Ben & Margaret Arnold, can be seen. The farm land is across KY 61 and Old Burkesville Road. Not visible, in between, is Majestic Yachts new plant on Westwood Drive, which is, for the moment, a continuation of West Walker Road, the small lane just north of the Y on and the Christian Life Center on Hudson Street. An accompanying photo from the batch tower illustrates how close it is to the Y, the other way.

The Western Bypass: from a midpoint batcher to Burton Auto

2007-06-08 - West Walker Road - Photo By Ed Waggener.
From a midpoint batch tower, mid way between the Greensburg/Hudson Street Y and KY 61 south of Columbia, it is apparent how much closer KY 61 between Greensburg and Burkesville will be when the Western Bypass is complete. The batch tower is located on West Walker Road, which becomes Westwood Drive toward new KY 61 South. The notch in the skyline in the center of the photo beyond Hudson Street, beyond Greensburg Street, up the hill by Sherman and Sherman Wayne Burton's auto salvage center, and a very short distance for the Adair County School District campus. A companion photo shows the view from the batch tower in the opposite direction.
