  • EVENTS: In 1835 Phiness Taylor Barnum, P.T. Barnum, the circus one, not the former Trinity UMC pastor, began his first circus tour of the United States. In 1866, President Grover Cleveland married Frances Folsom in the White House becoming the only president to wed in the White House.
  • BIRTHS: In 1913, Barbara Pym, English novelist. In 1920, Frank Goad Clement, twice governor of Tennessee, who was keynote speaker at the Adlai E. Stevenson nominating convention in 1956 ("How long, oh Lord, How Long") and once spoke at the Adair County Fairground after the late Congressman Frank Chelf spoke. Chauffered from the fairground, Clement, who could give as emotional speeches as anyone, asked of Chelf, "Who was that tearsjerking SOB who spoke before me?" A true story. Grover Cleveland Gilpin, an ear witness, told us. In 1943, Ralph Roy Waggener, founder of South Central Printing and "It's Just for Smiles" Adair County's favorite paper, at 705 Jamestown ST, Columbia, KY.

Adair County Road Department: Latest report, Friday, June 1, 2007: We will be ditching on Old Portland Road and the kemp Road in District 5. We will be mowing roadsides in District 1, in the Millerfields area. The sidemower will be on the Butler branch Road in District 6 and along the Rocky Hills Road in District 5. Have a good weekend. Please drive carefully in these areas. -LISA LEE, from the office of Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton.

KY 92 is closed 1.6 miles east of KY 55 for construction of a new bridge over Cedar Creek. But it is expected to be open around June 10-12, Amy Mitchum, a spokesperson for Garrison Construction Co, said .
