Columbia man airlifted to UK Medical Center after incident at jail

An arrest yesterday afternoon was followed by an assault on a police officer and an altercation, according to a KSP report, which resulted in Billy Phillips, 53, Columbia, KY, being transported from the Adair County Regional Jail to the Westlake Regional Hospital helipad, then to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington, KY, via helicopter.

At approximately 4:31pm, Kentucky State Police Trooper BJ Burton arrested Phillips on East 80 near the Adair/Russell County line. Phillips was charged with DUI 1st.



At approximately 5:40pm, Trooper Burton arrived at the Adair County Jail. Once inside the jail, the KSP report says, Phillips lunged at Trooper Burton several times. During the last altercation, Trooper Burton struck Phillips, and Phillips fell into the wall and onto the floor.

During the course of the fall, the report continues, Phillips either struck his head agains the wall or the concrete floor, and the Adair County Emergency Medical Service was notified and Phillips began the trip to Lexington.

No further update on the condition of Mr. Phillips has been received at this time.
