Memorial Day Weekend: Remembering the sacrifice in Vietnam THE INFANTRYMAN IN VIETNAM Photos accompany this article To the editor, ColumbiaMagazine.com Mr Murley's nice photo made me wonder what the memories and impressions of the public were of Vietnam. I'm sure many have little or noidea of what that country was like in the late 60's. The two which accompany this note show another side of that conflict. One shows a couple of GI's on patrol in scrub brush country somewhere northwest of Saigon in early 1967, the temperature would have been very close 100 degrees. The second photo is of an unamed Adair Countian, a GI on a day patrol in a Rubber Plantation, inthe Loc Ninh area, which is probably around 75 miles North of Saigon and very close to Cambodia. When you view the picture, notice the red clay dirt on his pants. He probably had worn these pants for at least two weeks, as jungle fatigues were very seldom washed. You just wore them until they wore out. I hope we can all remember to say a prayer of thanks for those which gave their all, in all our wars and also for our troopsin the middle east at this time.
