Record number attend this LWC pastoral ministry school By Emily Harlan, Lindsey Wilson staff writer If attendance at this week's pastoral ministry school at Lindsey Wilson College is any indication, the future of leadership in The United Methodist Church is bright. Lindsey Wilson's Sumner Campus Ministry Center hosted the annual school, held by the Kentucky Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. The weeklong school, which has been held at Lindsey Wilson eight times over the past nine years, certifies laypersons from across the country to serve as pastors and present the sacraments in their assigned United Methodist churches. This year's school attracted a record 37 men and women. The school educates participants on a range of issues within the pastorate, according to Lindsey Wilson Chaplain Troy Elmore, who was one of the school's instructors. "We like hosting the school because it fits in with our philosophy of continuing education and preparing a well-equipped clergy," Elmore said. "We take our church-relatedness seriously at Lindsey Wilson, and this school continues that tradition." During the week, guest speakers led sessions on issues new pastors will face in their appointed churches. During the day, participants received information about theology, sacraments, leadership, crisis counseling and personal renewal. In the evening, participants enjoyed Bible study and worship. Co-Director Mary Lou Stephens said the studies are intentional in their purpose. "We put together a course that helps people learn to teach, preach and heal," Stephens said. "We give them practical things they can take back with them and apply to their individual situations." Co-Director Kenneth Jessee said the environment was supportive. "Lindsey Wilson and the license for pastoral ministry school share the same vision of enabling students to go into the world and make a difference for Christ," Jessee said. Cleve Bowling of Hill Creek United Methodist Church in Clay County, KY, said he enjoyed the sense of community generated during the week. "This experience has been wonderful, amazing," Bowling said. "If I've taken one new thing from this experience that will better my ministry, it's been worthwhile -- that new thing is community." Buridena Workman of Lindsey Chapel in Grayson, KY, said The United Methodist Church should be proud of the speakers and directors that made this year's pastoral ministry school a success. "This week has enhanced spiritual awareness as to the needs of local churches," Workman said. "It gave me the tools I need to be effective at a local level. This school is one of the most valuable things the Methodist church has. It shows we have a caring ministry." Asbury Seminary student Ben Bowman said he enjoyed the "spiritual space" Lindsey Wilson provided for pastors to grow "The people that attended benefited by seeing the care and forethought that went into the planning," Bowman said. "If we don't grow as ministers, the people we serve don't grow. If we become closer to God, our congregations get the same chance to grow closer to God." This story was posted on 2007-05-25 15:58:47
