LWC to confer 182 degrees Saturday, May 12, 2007

Ceremony will conclude largest graduating class in history of school

By Duane Bonifer, LWC Public Affairs Director

More than 182 students and their families will witness history on Saturday, May 12, when they participate in Lindsey Wilson College's 2007 spring commencement ceremony.

The Lindsey Wilson community will hold the college's 85th commencement exercises for the spring portion of its Class of 2007 at 10 a.m. CDT on Saturday, May 12, in Biggers Sports Center. Lindsey Wilson will confer a total of 182 graduate and undergraduate degrees at the May 12 ceremony, concluding the largest graduating class in the college's 104-year history.

Including the degrees awarded at the 2006 winter commencement last December, Lindsey Wilson's Class of 2007 is a record 444 students.

"To be sure, it's wonderful to have a record number of degrees awarded this school year because of the impact a college education will have on our graduates and their families," Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr. said "It's also exciting that many of our graduates will remain in Kentucky after graduation, which will help our commonwealth take one more step toward reaching its goals of having a more educated citizenry."

Lindsey Wilson's 2007 spring commencement speaker will be William B. Julian, provost and dean of the faculty. He will also receive an honorary doctorate from the college.

Julian, who has led Lindsey Wilson's academic programs for more than 10 years, is retiring this spring after almost four decades of service in higher education.

Since being named Lindsey Wilson's chief academic officer in December 1996, Julian has led the largest expansion of the college's academic programs. The college's full-time faculty expanded from 44 to its current level of 71, four baccalaureate majors were added and the college began an innovative partnership with the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.

Even more impressive is the number of Lindsey Wilson faculty who now hold a terminal degree -- the highest degree in their area of study. When Julian came to Lindsey Wilson, 21 of the college's 44 full-time faculty held a terminal degree; today 52 of the college's 71 full-time faculty hold a terminal degree. Also during Julian's tenure, the college's enrollment grew from about 1,400 students in January 1997 to its current level of 1,791. The number of Lindsey Wilson graduates has also increased during Julian's tenure, forcing the college to hold two commencement ceremonies a school year.

Also receiving an honorary doctorate from Lindsey Wilson at the May 12 ceremony will be:
  • Joe Richardson of Louisville, KY. A native of Brandenburg, KY, Richardson is a longtime Lindsey Wilson trustee and was one of the founding partners of Richardson, Pennington, and Skinner, PSC, which is among the 15 largest accounting firms in Greater Louisville.

  • Harold Smith of Prospect, KY. A longtime Lindsey Wilson trustee, Smith founded Materials Development Inc., where he served as president and worked as a metallurgist.

  • Werner and Helen Vogel of Louisville, KY. Supporters of Lindsey Wilson students and academic programs for more than 20 years, Werner Vogel retired from the Henry Vogt Machine Co., and Helen Vogel is a retired Philip Morris chemist.

Following spring commencement, the Lindsey Wilson National Alumni Association will hold a reception for graduates and their guests. The reception will be held in the Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center. For more information, contact the Lindsey Wilson Alumni Office at (270) 384-8400 or info@lindsey.edu.
