4th graders return as teachers, volunteers at Camp Casey Anna Parson and Ashley McLean were in charter class in 2004 By Dana Harmon Anna Parson and Ashley McLean (left to right in photo) began attending the Camp Casey Afterschool Program when the grant was awarded in 2004. They were regular attendees every year. Since our program only serves children in grades K-3, last school year was their last year to participate as students in Camp Casey. However, they have found a way to share with the younger participants this year by volunteering in Debbie Bradshaw's Garden Friends activity during Camp Casey. This was an activity that they both regularly attended when they were Camp Casey students. They help Mrs. Bradshaw in many ways with the class, but this week they became the teachers. Keep in mind these are 4th graders! They prepared and taught a lesson on plants and animals and how they survive. They even tied their lesson to Kentucky Core Content and prepared an assessment. They brought in some bamboo, aloe and a venus flytrap to demonstrate plant survival. Then they led the Garden Friends around the school grounds with clipboards in hand making observations of the plantlife there. These two young ladies are an excellent example of youth today and I applaud them for their outstanding work in our afterschool program. This story was posted on 2007-04-30 17:16:58
