LWC Campaign goal exceeded; new target $53 million

Changing Lives Fund drive at LWC was to have ended June 30 and raise $33 million; but with $36 million already raised, drive is extended to 20010 with new goal of $53 million, President Luckey announces at Founders' Day, 2007

By Duane Bonifer, Director of LWC Public Affairs

COLUMBIA, KY -- Saying that there is "no glory in shrinking," Lindsey Wilson College President William T. Luckey Jr. announced Thursday night that the college will extend its "Changing Lives Campaign" through June 30, 2010, and raise the campaign's goal from $33 million to $53 million.

The campaign, which went public in April 2004, was scheduled to end on June 30. Although consultants hired to help the college prepare for the campaign projected that Lindsey Wilson would raise $1012 million, the college has raised almost $36 million, almost $3 million more than the campaign's $33 million goal.

"God did not bring us to this point in our journey so that we could shrink away from our challenges," Luckey told more than 325 college supporters at the annual Founders' Day Banquet, held in Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center. "There is no glory in shrinking; we are born to shine. Besides, playing small doesn't serve the world."

The Lindsey Wilson Board of Trustees felt that extending the campaign and raising its goal by $20 million would help the college "soar" and reach new heights, Luckey said. "Our board of trustees decided that rather than playing it small and shrinking away from our challenges, it was time for this college to soar," he said. "The trustees decided that rather than celebrating and concluding the $36 million raised, we would celebrate and give thanks for the funds we have received -- but we would also extend the campaign."

Another reason to extend the campaign, Luckey said, was because of higher education's vital place in society.

"This world is changing, and places like Lindsey Wilson College become even more important to our future," he said. "I don't know of any place that is more vital to the future of this country and our society than our colleges and our universities -- especially like colleges like Lindsey Wilson, that are focused on teaching values and educating the whole person. ... We understand that there is more to an education than compiling credit hours in the least expensive fashion. An education without values, without a soul is meaningless."

The "Changing Lives Campaign" was announced on April 22, 2004, with an $8.6 million commitment from James R. and Helen Lee Fugitte of Elizabethtown, Ky. The $8.6 million commitment included $3 million that was used to build the recently opened Jim and Helen Lee Fugitte Science Center.

In addition to a science center, the goals of the "Changing Lives Campaign" are: build a new learning center; transform the college's current science building into a multiuse classroom building; add $15 million to the Lindsey Wilson Endowment; and raise $3.5 million for the Lindsey Wilson Fund.

New initiatives to be supported by the extended campaign will be announced later this year. And the additional initiatives will be used to support Lindsey Wilson's mission of serving every student, every day.

"You believe there is a place for a college like Lindsey Wilson -- where students are at the center of campus life and the growth of every student, every day matters to all faculty and staff," Adair County native Dr. Robert Goodin, now of Louisville, KY, a 1959 Lindsey Wilson alumnus, said in his Founders' Day Banquet emcee remarks. "You believe that although we live in a time when new information seems to be increasing almost exponentially and the world seems to be getting smaller every day, our society needs valuescentered institutions like Lindsey Wilson -- institutions that impart not just knowledge to their students, but values as well.

Through the years we've all learned the hard way that knowledge without wisdom is not simply useless, it can also be dangerous."

Earlier on Thursday at the college's annual Honors Convocation in Biggers Sports Center, a member of the senior class received the President's Award and two faculty members were honored for being outstanding teachers.

Senior Dustin Beard of Bowling Green, Ky., received the President's Award for his accomplishments in the classroom and service to the Lindsey Wilson community. A two-term president of the Lindsey Wilson Student Government Association, Beard is a double-major in history and Christian ministries. He will graduate next month with a perfect 4.0 grade point average, only the third baccalaureate student to graduate with Lindsey Wilson with a 4.0 cumulative grade point average.

Assistant Professor of History Melinda J. Senters of Somerset, KY, was named 2006-07 Teacher of the Year by the Lindsey Wilson Student Government Association. A Lindsey Wilson alumna and Green County, KY, native, Senters has been a member of the Lindsey Wilson faculty since 2000. She was selected by the Lindsey Wilson SGA for her "outstanding service to the students and mission of Lindsey Wilson."

Associate Professor of Communication Susan K. Minton of Columbia was recognized by the General Board of Higher Education & Ministry of The United Methodist Church and the Lindsey Wilson faculty with the 2006-07 Exemplary Teaching Award. Minton has been a member of the college's faculty since 1990.
