Letter: Comment on Mayor letter, population static at 3,800

To the Ed., CM:

I can say without reservation that I am proud of all involved in procuring grants and funds to install sewer lines in Green Hills Subdivision. I am also thankful that we will not have to pay the usual hookup fee.

I am proud that our community is growing, expanding, and becoming a better place to live. I am elated that a combination of rust, decay, and a few wayfaring automobiles have finally removed the 3800 population signs which I drove by for three decades. How we could have gone through three censuses and not have lost or gained one single soul is beyond me. We must hold some kind of record for a static population. I am being quite frank with you, if after the next census our population is 3800, I will consider going street by street and counting everyone myself.

After having lived in the city, at one time, and paying city taxes, I can also say without reservation that I do have a few reservations about going back into the city. No reflection on anyone, past or present, just a few reservations having to do with and closely associated with having to pay more taxes. I worked for state government for 30 years. I know taxes make the governmental world go round. I know that taxes are essential to providing the governmental services we all have come to depend upon. Just please excuse me for not being happy about having to pay more.

Somewhere, sometime between the beginning of my formal educational career at Breeding and the ending at Lindsey Wilson I remember encountering three prepositional phrases: of the people, by the people, for the people. After having read the cacophony of proposed ordinances requiring fees and payments just for doing business in our fair community, I wonder if there should not be a fourth prepositional phrase - on the people!! Come on folks, dont you think we should be rewarding professional folks for doing business in our community, not penalizing them. Isnt working hard, making a profit and paying federal, state, local, and property taxes enough. Just to charge someone for setting up shop; isnt that a bit much? If there is justification for these ordinances just let me know and I will stand corrected.

Needing correction,
s/Billy Joe FudgeFor the related story, Click Here.
