Betty Sue Jasper photo of Bearwallow Curve, draws high praise

The image of Bearwallow Curve was captured in a most unforgettable way by Columbia photographer Betty Sue Jasper, and it certainly elicited comments and memories from ColumbiaMagazine.com readers.

For Morris Shepherd, the photo brought back the memory of a wreck, and of some good people who helped him on his way.

He wrote, "I remember this curve well!! I was driving from Columbia to visit my parents in the Millerfield community. A light mist was falling. I drove into the curve a little to fast, started to slide, over-corrected and turned over in the ditch. The nice Hitch family (which I had just passed) stopped and helped me get my car back on its wheels and on my way with a creased top."

In all likelihood, a number, probably dozens or even hundreds, more drivers can remember mishaps in the curve. For many years, negotiating the curves at the highest speeds, with a witness riding shotgun, was a serious rite of passage, particularly for the male of the Burton Ridge (and, truthfully, all of Adair County) species.

When loud pipes were the vogue, some claimed to be able to sit on the Square and follow a car by sound as well as GPS can locate one today. Bearwallow was as far out as they'd claim to hear, but it was as entertaining as listening to the hounds after a fox, and quite a bit more comfortable a sport.

For Ann Murphy, the photo was simply a matter of appreciation. She wrote, "This picture looks like it could have been painted. Thanks to the photographer for posting it." For Ann, Betty Sue Jasper, "Thanks."

"The Old Coddger," a fellow photographer and a great one too, said the picture was outstanding. He wrote, "The only thing missing is Pink! ! ! ! !" That would refer to Pink Burton, we'd think.
