Founder of U.S. Dream Academy to speak at LWC

2007 Founders' Day Dinner will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2007

By Duane Bonifer, Director Public Affairs, LWC

The founder of the critically acclaimed U.S. Dream Academy will deliver the keynote address at Lindsey Wilson College's 2007 Founders' Day Dinner, to be held on Thursday, April 26.

The Rev. Wintley Phipps, whose efforts to reach out to at-risk youth have earned him praise from the White House to the Oprah Winfrey Show, will speak and perform some of his songs at this year's Founders' Day Dinner.

"Pastor Phipps is an incredible speaker with an incredible message," Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr., said, "People will enjoy hearing him speak and perform."

In addition to the Founders' Day Dinner, the day will include the college' annual Honors Convocation.

"Founders' Day is an important time at Lindsey Wilson because it's a celebration of the people who have made this college such a special place," Luckey said. "It's also a celebration of what our students and faculty have accomplished throughout the school year."

Honors Convocation will be held at 4:00pm CT in Biggers Sports Center. The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature more than two dozen academic honors, including presentation of the President's Award, Teacher of the Year and the new Begley Scholars.

The President's Award is presented annually by the president to a graduating member of the senior class who best exemplifies the spirit of the Lindsey Wilson mission; the teacher of the Year is given annually by the Lindsey Wilson Student Government Association to a member of the college's faculty; and the new Begley Scholars will include members of the Lindsey Wilson freshman class of 2007 and one returning member of the college's student body.

The Founders' Day Dinner, which is by invitation, only, will be held at 6:pm CDT in Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center.

Phipps founded the non-profit U.S. Dream Academy in 1998 to give children with family members in prison mentoring, academic tutoring, and exposure to computers and the Internet. He currently serves as its president and chief executive officer.

"A humanitarian and visionary, Rev. Phipps inspires others to excellence and the realization of their life goals," Luckey said.

Born in Trinidad, West Indies, and raised in Montreal, Phipps holds a bachelor of arts degree in theology and a master of divinity. He is a world-renowned vocal artist, pastor, motivational speaker and education activist.

Phipps has been the featured speaker and performer at many notable occasions around the world. Earlier this year, he delivered the inspirational address and prayer for the opening of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa; he has performed Presidents Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Clinton and George W. Bush; and he performed at the 2005 inaugural swearing-in ceremony of President Bush and also at the 1984 and 1988 National Democratic Conventions. He was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1988 and 1989; he is the author of The Power of A Dream; and he is founder of Songs of Freedom Publishing Co. and Coral Records Recording Co.
