By Mike Hewitt

In the cold, windy weather on Saturday, March 17, 2007, the Green River Road Race hosted by the Lindsey Wilson College Cycling Team, 103 USA Cycling riders from 6 states started the event.

James Hebert came all the way from Fort Collins, Colorado and finished 4th in the Category 4/5 event.

National Champions Curtis Tolson and Traci Huber and several members of their Texas Roadhouse team came to race in Columbia and came away with 3 first place finishes out of the 5 events.

The riders really liked the course. Many said it was one of the toughest they had ridden but they would return to race in Columbia again.

Jenifer Huff and her volunteers did a wonderful job of organizing the event and the Adair County Sheriff's Department with Deputy Tracy McCarol serving as race marshal, made the event one of the safest in the series so far. David Hansel and Michael "Spanky" Stewart of the Adair County EMS patiently stood by, and fortunately did not have to see action.

Lindsey Wilson College Cycling Teammembers figuredprominently in the results.

John Stevens, who rides for Team Barbasol in USA Cycling races, finished 4th in the Pro-1/2/3 race. Team members Ben Richardson finished 11th, Ben Weatherly finished 12th and Greg Powell finished 16th in the Category 3-4 race.

Jean Schneider finished 4th in the Womens race which moved her up to 3rd overall in the series. Samantha Hadley finished 9th overall.Lindsey Wilson College faculty member Chris Schmidt finished 25th in the Category 4/5 race.

Tom Waggener of Columbia came in 16th in the 4/5 category.

Robert Anderson arrived back from Iraq on leave just in time to see his son Kyle win his second race of the series. Kyle's grandfather drove 6 hours from Lancaster, OH to watch him compete in Columbia, KY.

Several teams, will grace the Green River Road Course today, including Team Cyclers Cafe/Humana, including Joff Hoyle, front; Tom Brockman, center; and Cyclers Cafe Owner, Joe Solm. This shot was taken March 3, 2007, at Round 1, near Lagrange, KY. The ambulance in the background is a must at cycle meets. Adair County EMS Director Terry Akin said that he will post at least one ambulance at Shepherd School Day. "They (race organizers) said that we were almost sure to be needed," Akin said. There is an element of danger in cycling races, not the least of which are dogs, particularly those breeds which chase. Dog owners along the race course are urged to keep animals away from passing cyclists.

The Roses are bike touring enthusiasts, who like to take rides in Adair County and also travel with guided groups in other states. Rose said that the tours usually entail trips of 60-75 miles per day. He said that he would use his bike more, but the absence of bike trails along roads like KY 206 make bike travel more difficult in Adair County. Rose is Director of Respiratory Therapy and is enthusiastic about the health benefits of biking. Photographer Dooley had set up to capture photographs of cyclist crossing the finish line at Purdy Separate Baptist Church, where cyclists were generally exhausted after the brutal climb up Rocky Hollow Hill south of Little Cake.
