Adair County pride soars on Academic Team records

Team takes great regional record, strong individual records, and backing of the highest officials in county, Ann and Mayor Bell, to Galt House this weekend. Complete article has important link, list of team members, special records

When the Academic Championships kick off tomorrow in Louisville, KY, a brainy, experienced Adair County High School academic team will be fielded by Coach Brett Reliford.

Their accomplishments are giving the community much to crow about.

Adair County Judge Ann Melton said, today, "I'm elated. Adair Countians are going to Lexington on Wednesday to back a great Adair County High School basketball team. I'm so proud of them. But I want everybody to know that I am just as proud of the Adair County High School Academic Team. Nothing can make me feel better about the future of Adair County than what these students are doing," she said.

Mayor Pat Bell now proudly tells anybody who will listen that Columbia doesn't have to worry about economic development. "All we have to do is point to these kids and say, "'Look. We've got brains here.'"

The Kentucky Academic Championships are held at the Galt house Hotel on the Ohio River in Louisville, KY. The are the finals of the prestigious Governor's Cup academic competition. Admission is free. There will be at or around 5,000 people in attendance.

Quick Recall, the event's public event, begins at 2:00pmET/1:00pmCT on Sunday, March 18, 2007, and many Adair Countians are expected to be present for the event.

Adair County High School will be taking a team which swept the Fourth Region competition this year as the Fourth Region's Overall Champions, the region's Quick Recall Champions, and the Futue Problem Solving Champions of the Region.

The victory gave Coach Brett Reliford the ACHS team a back-to-back 4th Region Quick Recall Championship.

The 2006 Quick Recall championship was the first for the team since the inaugural year for the Governor's Cup in 1986.

Future Problem Solving team in finals 3 straight years!

The Future Problem Solving program has also undergone a revival of sorts. Three years ago, ACHS established its first Future Problem Solving team after a 7-year absence from competition. In the past three years, Adair County has won the regional championship twice and was runner-up last year, giving Adair County finals representation in FPS three years in a row!

Hopes are high for the 2007 team to match or improve on the performance of last year's FPS team, which finished among the top 10 teams in the State of Kentucky.
