Day trip from Columbia: Destination Fonthill and about The H.M. Smith Gen. Mdse. & U.S. Post office at Fonthill, KY, is under 20 miles from Columbia, KY. To get there, take KY 80 East through and go approximately 5 miles east of Russell Springs to its junction with KY 76. A right onto KY 76 finds one at Fonthill in just a couple of tenths of a mile. The store is no longer open, but a sign on the door gives a bit of information on its maintenance. A peak through the front window is a look back in time. Sue Stivers remembers her grandmother shopping there. "She would order cloth there. She'd look at the samples. Mr. Smith would order the cloth. She'd wait a few weeks and then she would pick it up there." KY 76 downhill from the store is inviting. It's a short distance to Salem, where Russell County has one of the prettiest elementary schools in the state. A right turn takes one past Superior Battery Company, a national company which started in Russell County and then on to the Fairview Community, with its old Fairview Baptist Church and major new Bank of Jamestown facility. A left, West, on KY 80 takes one back to Russell Springs where all main roads offer options back to Adair County. Oh, yes, a big Adair County connection. Stand on the front porch of the H.M. Smith store while in Fonthill. Look up the hill and a little east across KY 80 where there are two impressive homes. The builder of one them is Columbian Terry Harvey's H & H Construction Company.
