How times change! Some math from a mind perpetually locked at nine years old: $49 Billion dollars, give or take a few million, would buy this whole county, if a sale yesterday is the average. Bare ground in Russell Heights brought the equivalent of $190,217.90 at an auction on Saturday. There are, as everybody knows, approximately 260,377.6 heavenly acres in Adair County. If every one of them were merely worth what this lot brought, a stranger could ride in with $50 billion dollars in his or her pocket could and buy this sacred shire, after adding on for accessory infrastructure, churches and school houses, and what PVA Junior Feese has on his books. And you remember when $100 an acre land with fire wood if not marketable timber, was plentiful, back when you could have bought the whole downtown, less the banks, for a piddling $1.2 million as appraised by the late Coy Downey.
