Letter: Reader suggests reading Johnstown Flood

Johnstown Flood is compelling book, but Ann Curtis stresses dismilarities between Pennysylvania disaster and situation at Wolf Creek

To the editor, ColumbiaMagazine.com:

All the recent articles about Wolf Creek Dam have reminded me of one of my favorite books:

"The Johnstown Flood" by David McCullough (1968).

It's the story of the 1889 Pennsylvania flood which killed over 2,000 people within a matter of minutes. It was caused by a failure of an earthen dam built to provide a lake resort for wealthy industrialists of the day -- Henry Clay Frick, Andrew Mellon and Andrew Carnegie, to name a few.

The account of the chain of events leading up to the failure of the dam makes for very compelling reading.

I can't help but think of this book every time I read about Wolf Creek Dam's troubles. Although, thankfully, there is certainly NO comparison to the details of the Johnstown incident!

I do want to stress that the details of the break of the dam above, at Johnstown PA, are not at all similar to Wolf Creek. For one thing, they're separated by over a century of time . . . Johnstown's was an earthen dam, Wolf Creek is concrete . . . Johnstown's dam was built in the mountains, above the town; Wolf Creek Dam is on lower ground . . . Johnstown had little or no engineering monitoring, Wolf Creek does, etc.

However, if you need a "worst case scenario" of what happens when a dam breaks, reading this book will provide it.

Best regards,
Ann Curtis
