Trash rate increase gets second reading, OK

Rates will increase March 1. Utility bills will show increase on April 1 billing. Rate boost will swing department from $4-5 thousand a month loss to a like profit. Residences go from $10 to $13 per month, with similar increases up the chart.

By Ed Waggener

The Columbia City Council approved second reading to Ordinance No. 830.16 today, Tuesday, February 27, 2007, at 10:00am.

The ordinance gives a fairly uniform percentage rate increase. Residences will go from $10.00 to $13.00 per month.

A quorum of four councillors, Charles Grimsley, June Parson, Joe Moore and Edwin Taylor voted unanimously, 4-0, to approve the measure. Councillor Charles Grimsley commented, "There's no doubt it's needed."

The increase will go into effect March 1, 2007, but won't appear on utility bills until the April 2007 billing, City Clerk Carolyn Edwards said that the rate increase will mean an approximately $9,000 in additional revenue for the Sanitation Department. The Department was losing from $4,000 to $5,000 per month, Mayor Pat Bell said. The increase should mean that the department will show a profit of a like amount."We'll put the money away to buy the next truck we need," the Mayor said. "That's the way that works."In fact, the City had escrowed all the money needed to buy the last truck, but chose to finance it because interest earned on the escrowed money exceeds the cost of a lease.Councillor Joe Moore moved for adjournment at 10:02am.

Present at the meeting, besides the previously mentioned Mayor, City Councillors, and City Clerk were one media representative and Mr. Roy Rademacher, the Council's most loyal citizen attendee.
