Obituary: Thelbert Lee Curry, 70, member New Life Church

He was a successful, respected businessman; a dedicated civic leader, a devoted Mason, a devout church leader, an exemplary family man. With the death of Thelbert Curry, the community has lost one of its most treasured citizens

Thelbert Lee Curry, 70, 608 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY, passed away Sunday, February 25, 2007, at 5:20pm at his home, after an illness.

The funeral service will be Thursday, March 1, 2007, at 2:00pm CT, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home with Bro. Gerald Reliford officiating.



He was born August 9, 1936, the son of the late Ausie Walker and Ida S. Willis Curry of Adair County.He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Lewis Curry, on January 6, 1998. Later, he married Nola Kelsay Curry, who survives.

Besides his wife, he is survived by the following:
  • Two daughters and their spouses: Lila and John Ford, Columbia, KY; and Nancy and Richard Griffith, Las Vegas, NV.

  • One step son and his spouse: Tony and Kim Mitchum, Glensfork, KY

  • One foster son and his spouse: Ed and Donna Skalecki, Palmetto, FL

  • Three brothers and their spouses; Ben and Imogene Curry, Shepherdsville, KY; Guin and Jennie Curry, Smithsville, KY; and Clifton and Phyllis Curry, Columbia, KY

  • Four sisters and their spouses: Darcie and Phillip Radford, Shepherdsville, KY; Nona Bess and Odell Bennett, Edmonton, KY; Maggie and the late Lewis Janes, Columbia, KY; and Nell Curry, Columbia, KY.

  • Five grandchildren: Andrew Thole, Joshua Ford, Monica McElyea, Samantha Griffith, and Holli Mitchum

  • And several aunts, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends
He was preceded in death by one son, Myron Neil Curry, on December 18, 1962.

Mr. Curry was owner of Curry's Floor Covering and Wallpaper for 36 years.

He was a member of New Life for the Nations Church and served as Chairman of the Board for the Bearwallow Perpetual Care Fund, a founding member of the Adair County Jaycees, a founding member of the Adair County Rescue Squad and was a 40+ years member of the Hood Masonic Lodge #839.

Interment will be in Bearwallow Cemetery.

A Masonic service will be Wednesday night, February 28, 2007, at 7:00pm by Hood Masonic Lodge #839 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Bearwallow Cemetery Fund or to the New Life for the Nations Church Building Fund and may be made at the funeral home.

Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
