Pen Waggener paid a visit to Lake Cumberland Saturday, February 10, 2007, and came back with some photographs now online. The streaks continued last night for Lindsey Wilson basketball. The women moved into sole possession of the No. 1 position in the Mid-South Conference with a win over No. 8 ranked University of the Cumberlands, but the men lost again.   • EVENTS:In 1790, the Quakers petitioned Congress for the abolition of slavery. On this day in 1809, Robert Fulton patented the steamboat, and for whom the city of Fulton and Fulton County, KY were named. In 1938, BBC Television produced the first ever science fiction television with Karel Capek play, R.U.R. which used the word "robot" for the first time. In 2006, Dick Cheney accidentally shoots fellow hunter in the face while the two were hunting together.
  • BIRTHS:In 1847, part-time Kentuckian Thomas A. Edison.
  • DEATHS: In 1994, William Conrad was born William Cann in Louisville, Kentucky. The actor was best known for his role as Tv detective "Cannon," but he was also the first actor to play Marshal Matt Dillon in "Gunsmoke."
  • OBSERVANCES: It's National Inventor's Day in the U.S. which is a good time to remember R.L. Jones, who built the Clayton House on Highway 206 and who was the inventor of packaging and wrapping machines which made him rich, rich, rich. And it might be another good day to remember Adair Countian Lingan Selby, (see Today, February 5, 2007 for Lingan Selby Day in Adair County, KY) who tried to invent a perpetual motion machine, but the device killed him. His first final resting place was at the Gilmer Cemetery at Holladay Place. His second final resting place is Gilmer Cemetey within Union Cemetery on Milltown Church Road, where it was moved to make way for the Super Wal-Mart.
