Assault/barricade suspect found dead; suicide suspected

Jamie S. Smith, 28, found in trailer on Roachvile Ford Road 11 miles east of Greensburg, dead from apparently self-inflicted wounds. His victim, now in Louisville Hospital, is identified as Melanie Blackstone. Her wounds do not appear to be life-threatening. Two children found unharmed.

On February 9, 2007, around 5:00am CT, the Columbia State Police Post received a call from the Green County Dispatch about a shooting 11 miles East of Greensburg on Roachville Ford Road.



After receiving a gunshot wound, the victim, Melanie Blackstone, left her trailer with one child and went to a neighbors house to call for help.

The accused, Jamie S. Smith, age 28, returned to the residence where two other children remained in the trailer and barricaded himself inside.

Around 5:51 a.m., officers secured the scene and attempted to make contact with the subject. Around 10:00am., Kentucky State Police Special Response Team entered the trailer and found Jamie Smith dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The two children were unharmed.

At this time, Ms. Blackstone's injuries do not appear to be life threatening. Ms. Blackstone is being treated at University of Louisville Hospital.

This case is being investigated by Detective Israel Slinker of Kentucky State Police Post 15, Columbia, KY, and the Green County Sheriff's Office.
