COMMENTARY: Striking a balance on beautiful wildlife

"I think as man encroaches into areas once woodland, maybe people need to be aware that not all wildlife are warm fuzzy woodland creatures we see in animated movies."

By Cynthia Meyer
Sycamore Springs, near Breeding, KY

A bobcat was legally harvested by a man near here, on his property off Reece-Hurt Rd. just off KY 533 in Metcalfe county late last year.

I did not mention when I submitted the first pictures, because the first reaction most people have when you talk of shooting a bobcat is, "Why did he do that"? and, "They are such beautiful animals."

Yes, they are beautiful, and I also enjoy seeing them in the wild.

But due to the timbering of woodlands these animals have fewer habitats to hide in as they once did, forcing them to come in closer to populated areas.

I think as man encroaches into areas once woodland, maybe people need to be aware that not all wildlife are warm fuzzy woodland creatures we see in animated movies. Although beautiful and regal in their habitat they resort to their primal instincts of flight or fight if cornered or confined.

On Chestnut Grove Road alone, probably a 6 mile stretch, there have been 6 farms logged in the last year, and a few more added to the list if you want to go back 2 or 3 years.

What other choice do these animals have but to come in closer contact to developed areas?

Personally, I go out and check my horses before bed, and my heart skips a few beats when I see a big fuzzy fat raccoon or fox out in the paddock area, less than 100 feet from the front door, and I would rather not think of surprising a bobcat while he is nosing around.
Cynthia Meyer submitted a photo of a bobcat which wandered into a backyard in the vicinity of Breeding, KY, recently. This letter is a comment on that incident. The photo is now attached to this article.

The photo followed a letter from Billy Joe Fudge concerning a beautiful bobcat killed on the highway just a couple of miles north of the courthouse square. To see that article in this thread, Click Here
