LWC Women Win 70-56, CU Men Win 64-55

Split doubleheader at Biggers last night

By Chris Wells, LWC Sports Information Director

COLUMBIA, KY -- The Lindsey Wilson College mens and womens basketball teams split a doubleheader with Campbellsville (KY) University last night, Thursday, January 25, 2007, at Biggers Sports Center.

The Blue Raider women remained perfect in conference play with a 70-56 win over the Lady Tiger, while the Blue Raider men fell to Campbellsville 64-55 in the nightcap.

In the womens game, Lindsey Wilson held the Lady Tigers (10-10, 0-2 in the Mid-South Conference) to 30 percent (18-of-60) from the field -- including just one of 13 (7.7 percent) from beyond the three pont arc -- en route to the 70-56 win.

Senior guard Tiffany Reid and junior Kara Osterfeld fueled a 14-2 run midway through the first half to help the Blue Raiders (8-14, 2-0) take a 25-14 lead.

Campbellsville fought back, cutting the Lindsey Wilson to six points on three different occasions. But a 6-2 Lindsey Wilson run to close half enabled the Blue Raiders to take a 42-32 lead into the locker room.

Lindsey Wilson scored five to the first six points in the second half to take a 14 point (47-33) lead. Campbellsville managed to cut the Blue Raider lead in nine points three different times but would get no closer.

Reids 17 points led the Blue Raiders. The Shepherdsville, Kentucky, native, hit four of six three pointers to help the Lindsey Wilson make half (7-of-14) of its baskets from long range.

Lindsey Wilson junior Terran Duncan chipped in 16 points, while Osterfeld and senior Shola Aladejebi each contributed 14 points.

Campbellsville senior Julija Ilic led the Lady Tigers with 11 points.

"Its a great win, a total team effort," LWC womens basketball coach John B. Wethington said. "We did exactly what you have to do to win a conference championship and that's wn at home. Now we have to bottle all the energy we had tonight and take it to West Virginia Tech."

No. 15 ranked CU Men upset No. 6 LWC

In the mens game, No. 15-ranked Campbellsville used an 11-0 run early in the first half and never relinquished the lead to upset No. 6-ranked Lindsey Wilson 64-55.

Lindsey Wilson led 9-5 three minutes into the first half before the Campbellsville (18-2, 1-1) run produced a 15-9 Tiger lead with 13:47 left in the half.

The Blue Raiders (16-4, 1-1) cut the Tiger lead to 24-22 and looked as if they had the momentum heading into the break. But a three pointer by senior Bubba Long as the shot clock expired in the next to last possession of the half lifted the Tigers to a 27-22 lead with 1:03 left.

Lindsey Wilson senior John Fitzgerald scored the halfs final points to cut the Campbellsville lead to 27-24 at the break.

Much like the first half run, Campbellsville -- who was the aggressor throughout the game -- outran the Blue Raiders to open the second half. Campbellsville scored the halfs first nine points to push the lead to a game-high 13 points (39-26).

"You have to give all the credit to Campbellsville," Lindsey Wilson mens basketball coach Paul Peck said. "They beat us in every aspect of the game. They wanted it more and we deserved the beating they put on us."

Lindsey Wilson senior Lavar Gilbert refused to allow the Blue Raiders go down without a fight.

Gilbert -- who scored just two points in the first 20 minutes -- scored 14 of the Blue Raiders next 17 points to help Lindsey Wilson climb within six (45-39) with 10 minutes left. Gilbert finished with a career-high 18 points on eight of 15 shooting.

The Tigers slowly regained control of the game pushing the lead back to 12 (58-46) with just over a minute remaining. The Blue Raiders cut the lead to seven but would get no closer.

Campbellsville dominated on both ends of the court, making 52.3 percent (23-of-44) of its shots and limiting the Blue Raiders to 41.5 percent (22-of-53). The Tigers also out-rebounded Lindsey Wilson 34-24.

Lindsey Wilson sophomore Brandon Adams -- who tied a career-high with16 points -- joined Gilbert as the only Blue Raiders in double figures.

Four Campbellsville Tigers placed in double figures led by junior Zach Allender's 16 points. Senior James Stewart added 12 points.
The Lindsey Wilson women's and men's teams return to action on Saturday, January 27, as they travel to West Virginia Tech for a Mid-South Conference doubleheader. The womens game is scheduled to tip-off at 1:00pm CT, followed by the men's game.
