Feedback: Airport small example of larger problem

Writer says unless officials get out of comfort, "Columbia will be a ghost town in 20 years

Editor: ColumbiaMagazine.com

The airport expansion is but a small example of a larger problem that this community has. The true problem is infrastructure. How are we going to provide for large corporations when we do not have the roads, water, sewer, phone or internet they require. In providing these services, Adair County is easily 20 years behind the rest of the country.

It is not uncommon for large processing facilities or medical centers to require 200 pair phone services and 7 or 8 dedicated T1 internet services. Adair county cannot provide either. There are some areas of the county where Duo-County Telephone barely has 20 pair combined.

When it comes to water service, how are we going to provide for a manufacturing center like the Magna facility just built in Bowling Green. Can Adair County provide 12 to 20 inch dedicated water lines. Can the current roads handle 100 extra trips with 18 wheelers.

The airport expansion needs to be part of a grand plan to bring Adair County into the 21st Century. Failure to do so will further erode our chances of growing this community. As any skilled city planner can tell you, a community that does not grow will die. I fear that if the people of this community do not force our officials out of their comfort zone and demand changes be made, that Columbia will be a ghost town in 20 years and all that will remain is a developed interchange on the parkway.
