An Adair County Middle School Teacher has been named the outstanding education graduate in the Southeast United States.

Rachel Genakos recently received the Professional Development Award from the Southeastern Regional Association of Teacher Educators. The award is given to the outstanding education graduate from colleges and universities in the 15-state education association.

Genakos, who graduated from Lindsey Wilson College in 2005, is the third consecutive Lindsey Wilson graduate to earn the regional honor. The award is based on academic achievements, activities during college, resume and extracurricular activities.

"It's certainly an honor to receive this award," said Genakos, who teaches seventh-grade language arts at Columbia's Adair County Middle School. "I have nothing but good things to say about Lindsey Wilson's education program. Other schools' programs might be easier than Lindsey Wilson's, but you are going to have a big adjustment when you get into the classroom because you won't be pushed as hard as you are at Lindsey Wilson. Lindsey Wilson did such a good job preparing me to be a teacher."

Before earning the regional honor from SRATE, Genakos became the fourth Lindsey Wilson graduate to earn the Professional Development Award from the Kentucky Association of Teacher Educators, which is given to the outstanding education graduate in Kentucky.

A native of New Albany, Ind., Genakos was an NAIA All-American scholar athlete at Lindsey Wilson. She was a four-year member the Blue Raiders' volleyball team, was named to Who's Who Among Students In American Universities and Colleges and was a member of several honor societies. She graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in education and communication.

Her husband, Nicolas Genakos, is a 2006 Lindsey Wilson graduate.

Genakos said she became interested in teaching during her junior year at Lindsey Wilson. "I've always like working with kids," she said. "For me, it wasn't work."

Genakos said her experience in Lindsey Wilson's Education Division "100 percent prepared me for getting a job as a teacher."

"My internship as a teacher was a breeze because Lindsey Wilson taught me everything I needed to know about my first year," she said. "There wasn't anything that came about my first year as a teacher that I hadn't found the answer to as an education major at Lindsey Wilson."
