LETTER: Judy Goodin thanks Mrs. Marcum for story on Ralph Roy

I am Ralph M. Roy's daughter. I read the article that was printed in your magazine about my daddy (Remembering Toll Plaza Manager Ralph Roy). What Mrs. Marcum said about him sounded exactly right. He was a good Christian man. By the way, he probably did believe in equal rights to a certain extent. But, he always tried to be fair with everyone, both men and women.

He loved working on the Cumberland Parkway with all of his employees. He talked to me about alot of them and things that they had said and done. He never had anything bad to say about anyone. Just funny or interesting things that they had said or done on a particular day.

I know that he thought alot of all of them, because he always spoke well of them.

I would like to thank Mrs. Marcum for the kind words that she had for my daddy. I miss him greatly everyday.

His daughter,
Judy Goodin

Judy, I am Geniece Marcum's daughter and happy to have your letter. I heard about your dad over the years while Mom worked at the Edmonton Toll Plaza and Mr. Roy was the manager. Mom always had good things to say about him.

I nag Mom to write all the time and especially about the toll plaza years -- the streaker who shocked her into making a huge mistake that set off all the alarms; the poor frantic woman who stopped at Mom's window and cried, "I think my mother is having a heart attack, please call an ambulance!", and so many more incidents over those eleven years.

I hope Mom's story and your letter cause many more readers to recall fond memories and share them. It's hard to believe those toll booths are gone now along with such rich experiences for those who worked the jobs in them.

Sincerely,
Linda Marcum Waggener
