Remembering Toll Plaza Manager Ralph Roy by Geniece Marcum News that Ralph Roy, 76, of Russell Springs recently lost a battle with cancer was met with regret among former employees of the Edmonton Toll Plaza who worked under him during the years he served as Road Manager of Cumberland Parkway. While visiting my daughter in Columbia last Memorial Weekend, I had occasion to speak with Ralph, my former boss, and his wife Phyllis, by phone. He had hospice with him at that time, but still sounded very much like his old self. When I told him he had been a good boss he joked, "Woah! would you mind telling that to my wife?" Phyllis agreed that he'd been a good boss to her too. In my opinion he was a good boss, and a Christian, but tough enough to handle his job. Once several years ago, when we women collectors acted up, a remark was made by somebody that Mr. Roy was interfering with our equal rights. Well, when he heard that, Mr. Roy said, "If equal rights is what is wanted, equal rights is whatyou'll get. From now on, all women collectors will take their turns mowing the Plaza lawn weekly. Equal rights, you know! Guess who was first in line to mow? Piece 'a cake. Who knows what made him change his mind, but by the time the women all had the chance to fully experience our Equal Rights at the lawn mowing, Ralph had had a change of heart. The men quietly resumed mowing and the word was never mentioned to the women again. Among employees at the Edmonton Plaza during theyears I worked there were: Estill Hamilton, DonBastin, Wayne Edwards, David Brown, Tim Emmitt, MartyWilson, Eugene Harlow, Billy Reece, Mike Pennington,Chris Barlow, Peggy Jeffries, Plaza Manager, Julie Ford, Secretary; Janet Bell, Janice Poindexter, NeldaMorrison, Dorothy Wilson, Eugenia Martin, LouiseFirkins, Mary Lee Taylor, Lavonne Anderson, FlossieChaney, Becky McKinzie and Connie Humes. There wereothers besides, some hired on only to find that they didn't like the confinement of the job so they didn't hang around long. At the retirement of Peggy Jeffries, Estille Hamilton replaced her as Plaza Manager and Don Bastin became Assistant Mgr. He was replaced by Janet Bell at his death two years later. Eventually she became PlazaManager and Wayne Edwards Assistant Manager. All in all, a good crew to work with and the jobitself was an experience. There were uneventful daysof course when the traffic flowed through the gatewith little or no problems. Then there were times whenthings could go from dull to hair-raising, or fromhillarious to tragic, in the run of a day or nightshift. Geniece Marcum has been writing in Senior Quest magazine, where this article is featured, since her retirement from the Edmonton toll plaza in 1995. We invite anyone who worked with Ralph Roy at the Russell Springs toll plaza to send memories and names of those who worked there with him.
