The Adair County High School Beta Club will hold a chili supper and auction fundraiser at the Adair County High School to help the Walker Smith family of Columbia. The supper will begin at 5:30 p.m. CST at the high school cafeteria on Saturday, December 16, 2006. The auction is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. CST in the schools gymnasium.

We are so excited that the Beta Club can do something to help the Smith family, said Keri Willis, Beta Club co-sponsor. And we are thrilled with the donations for the auction. Willis said that the club will receive donations from actor John Corbett, from the television shows Northern Exposure and Sex in the City, as well as from country music artists Toby Keith, Alan Jackson, Brooks and Dunn, Vince Gill, and others.

Walker is a five year old who received a double-lung transplant three years ago from Saint Louis Childrens Hospital. Several months ago, Walker became ill and was flown back to St. Louis Childrens Hospital where he is presently in the Intensive Care Unit. Doctors have yet to diagnose what is causing Walkers lungs to fail.

Walkers mother, Rebecca Smith, is a teacher at Adair County High School. The faculty has donated enough sick days to enable Mrs. Smith and her husband, Rodney, to remain at their sons side, but the daily living and medical expenses continue to grow. Donations have been collected by the faculty, staff, and community members so far bringing in over $12,200. In addition to Walker, the Smiths also have a one year old daughter, Elizabeth.

We hope that the public will come out for this event, Willis said. Having celebrity donations as well as community gifts and donations will hopefully enable Walker and his family to have a less stressful Christmas season. On behalf of Adair County High School Beta Club, faculty, and staff, we would like to thank everyone for their continued support in making the Smith Christmas Challenge a success!
