The Winning Float Story: Pickett's Chapel UMC ". . . our goal. . . wasn't to win a prize, but to get out the Gospel of Christ" - ANN SMITH By Ed Waggener Six years after the Pickett's Chapel United Methodist Church won first place trophy for their Float entry, they've done it again. In the intervening years since 2000 they didn't lose. Not one time. They just didn't enter. "The youth of our church came to us this year and suggested another float entry," Ann Smith recalls. "and everything just seemed to come together." All the floats in this year's Christmas in Columbia were delightful, but the winning Adair County float was simply a work of awe. Even in practice in the McCammish Mfg. parking lot, when the angel spread her wings, it gave chill bumps. Float even more dramatic at night, in the parade As beautiful as it was by day, by night it was especially effective with its hundreds of lights in the parade. Councillor June Parsons had a Greensburg ST side of the courthouse view of the light float, which quieted the crowds as it passed. "When the angel of the Lord blew the the trumpet, it almost brought tears," she said. Everyone seemed to want to clap, but it would have felt irreverent to do so. The float was conceived and built by members of Pickett's Chapel United Methodist Church. As if the judges could picture effect of the float would have on the crowds lining the parade path, it came as no surprise when Dave Johnston, chairman of the Christmas in Columbia 2006, announced that the Pickett's Chapel float was the overall winner in the In-County. The theme of this year's Christmas in Columbia, "Christmas Past, Present, and Future," exactly fitted the ideas for the new float. "The youth of our church conceived the idea for the float," Ann Smith said. And a verse of scripture from the last book in the Bible, Revelation 1:8, "I was. I am. I will be." meshed so well with the Columbia Adair County Chamber of Commerce them for the year. The verse, in large letters, was on the sides of the float, under which were the words "(coming back on a white horse), and, under that, "The Almighty One." New float incorporated part of 2000 one The five year old float was still in member Junior Brown's shop, Mrs. Smith said, and from it, the float builders were able to get the "past" part of their theme. Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus, mounted on the back of the float, with an angel overhead. Nancy Taylor portrayed Mary. Her husband, Barney Taylor had the Joseph role. The angel had mechanical wings much more realistic than John Travolta's in Michael, and were in flight mode when the trumpet of the Angel at the Gates of Heaven would herald the re-coming of Christ on earth. Ann Smith portrayed the angel over the manager; Dariann Smith had the role of the Angel at the Gates of Heaven, with trumpet. "At the Cross" in the center of the float represented "Christmas Present." Ann Smith said. "Christ is still suffering for us today," she explained. Pastor Ronnie Turner and Meagan Coffey were in the "At the Cross" scene. Large white horse portrayed the Second Coming Christmas Future was represented by Jesus' second coming to earth, atop a giant, hand-fashioned white horse. Tony Rogers had the role of Jesus. "It was a lot of work," Ann Smith said, "but it fulfilled our goal, which wasn't to win a prize, but to get out the Gospel of Christ." PICKETT'S CHAPEL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH. 3047 Portland Road.
