The Church Street and High Street waterline project is complete, and customers were be re-connected to the water line beginning the week of November 28, Columbia Utilities General Manager Jim Williams announced at the regular third Tuesday November meeting of the Columbia Water Commission.

The board meeting was held early, at noon or the regular meeting date. Only three commmissioners were present, Chairman Robert Flowers, Dr. Ronald Rogers, and David Wells.

It was the first meeting following the death of Commissioner Craig Williams. Commissioner Larry Marshall was absent. Sympathy was sent to the family of Commissioner Williams and those present recalled fond memories of the time Mr. Williams had served on the Commission. Others present were CUC Director Jim Williams, Water Superintendent Dana Rogers, and Betty Coop, Assistant Office Manager.

In another note of sadness, Gas Superintendent Joe Hare was absent due to the illness of his son. However, Mr. Hare provided a technical report for the Gas Department, which is doing well and has no major problems at this time. (The sad word has reached Columbia of the passing of Mr. Hare's son, Craig. Details have not yet reach ColumbiaMagazine.com, but will be published when received.).

New lines will help reduce water distribution losses

The new lines will help reduce the water distribution loss. Dana Rogers, water superintendent, said that October water losses had doubled. One of the problems already discovered was on Church Street, and this has been directed. Another water leak was found on Hudson Street, at a fire hydrant, and this problem is being addressed, he said.

Sewer customers being added

Superintendent Dana Rogers reported that new sewer customers are being added.

Engineering underway for Fortune, Guardian STs work

It was also reported that engineering work for the replacement of water lines on Fortune and Guardian Streets is being done. The approximate cost of the work will be $54,000.00.

Problem with trailer park sewer hook-on

Mr. Rogers said that Perry Dunbar had paid for a sewer tap on his property in the Russell Heights section, but had been unable to hook onto the system. The property is not in the City Limits of Columbia, which was a problem he he purchased the trailer park. The Rescue Squad had made a deal with the former owner of the trailer park to allow a sewer line to cross Squad property. Mr. Rogers said that Mr. Dunbar would have to hook on to the Rescue Squad line in order to obtain services.

New gas line to UCB is complete except for under-road bore

The report noted that the new gas line to United Citizens Bank on Campbellsville Road is installed. The Gas Department is waiting for the State to give permission to bore under KY 55. When the under-road boring is done, the Gas Department will be ready to furnish natural gas to the new customers across the road from UCB. Sewer lines will be included when the under-road bore is complete.
