Christmas in Columbia 2006: Parade winners

Pickett's Chapel UMC, Karen Luttrell, Phelps Elementary get top awards in respective divisions

Pickett's Chapel United Methodist Church was the winner of the Adair County Floats Division trophy, Karen Luttrell in the non-float division, and Phelps Elementary School won the top prize for Out-of-County Float Division for Christmas in Columbia 2006.

The awards for the parade entries were made by Christmas in Columbia 2006 Chairman Dave Johnston and Donna Stotts in the parking lot of McCammish Manufacturing Company, on Industrial Drive in Columbia.

The presentations were made before the parade this year, so that winners could display signs noting their victories in the parade.

The awards event started at 3:30pm, Saturday afternoon, December 2, 2006. A hilltop breeze kept the site at what seemed to be a 20-degree lower wind chill factor, which sent many to warm vehicles periodically as they awaited the actual presentation. Two and one-half hours later, when the parade began, downtown Columbia was quite pleasant and much warmer.

The list of winners follows:

Winner: Pickett's Chapel United Methodist Church
1st Runner Up: Columbia Church of Christ
2nd Runner Up: Columbia Christian Church
3rd Runner Up: Summit Manor Nursing Home
Other entries included United House of Prayer, House of Styles, Purdy Separate Baptist Church, Mark Twain Shrine Club, and Team Gradyville.

OUT of COUNTY FLOATS DIVISION

NON FLOATS DIVISION

Winner: Karen Luttrell Mini horse and cart
1st Runner Up: Lewis Garrison, tractors

ALL THESE SMILES FROM THE COLUMBIA CHURCH OF CHRIST made the cold weather a little more bearable Saturday afternoon during the parade organiztion. Their float was first runner-up in the hometown division. The children of the church decorated the 12-foot tree and antiques like the hundred-year-old baby carriage adorned the float. Pictured above are James Allen and Caroline Hardwick in Santa colors down front, Keaton Kessler in the carriage, Kyla Kessler and Rickanne Bohannon beside him and in back are Jera Kessler, Madison Grant, Garrett Grant and Kenzie Rogers.
