Hallow Read celebration expanded to ACES

By Ellen Zornes
Title IV, Part A: Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities

All smiles . . . even though there were some very scaaaary creatures that evening! Yes, I'm referring to the third annual Hallow Read. Hallow Read has outgrown its original home at the Adair County Public Library and was held this year at the new Adair County Elementary School.

This year's event for children through sixth grade to celebrate reading (and math and social studies) also served as the Kick-off for Red Ribbon Week and National Eat with Your Family Night and was attended by approximately 400 'spooks' of all shapes and sizes.

The evening began with registration tables set up at both the front and rear entrances to the school where each child received a goody bag filled with an assortment of goodies from treats to Red Ribbon Week pencils, bookmarks and other substance abuse information.

From there, families gathered in the cafeteria to celebrate National Eat with Your Family Night to remind parents that they play the most important role in keeping their children drug free . . . that spending time with and talking with your children is still the most effective anti-drug available!

And to celebrate the importance of eating with your family, everyone enjoyed hot dogs and soft drinks donated by our Hometown IGA and was served using paper products donated by Dairy Queen, Domino's Pizza, McDonald's, Sonic, Subway and Wendy's.

Then, the reading, math and social studies fun began in classrooms and the library media center, all decorated for the event! Stories for all ages. . . one even including witches brew pumpkin seed estimation math games, and a classroom filled with representative items of Native American culture.

While children were enjoying the activities, parents were invited to attend a Meth Awareness Training in the school's computer lab. The evening ended with the showing of the short movie, Resurrection Mary, starring Adair County residents and written and directed by Adair Countys Matt Arnold.

And a very special "Thanks" to these businesses Hometown IGA for donated food and drinks; Dairy Queen, Dominos Pizza, McDonalds, Sonic, Subway and Wendys for donated paper products; Columbiamagazine.com, The Adair Progress, The Community Voice, WHVE Radio, and WAIN Radio, for public service announcements and advertisement, and corporate sponsor, DuoCounty Telecom.

On behalf of Lee Ann Jessee, Adair County Public Librarian; Debbie Cowan and Valerie Taylor, Family Connections Family Resource Center and Krystal Cundiff, LWC Human Services and Counseling Practicum Student, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for making the third annual Hallow Read so successful and so much fun!

It took many volunteers to make this event successful. . . Adair County Public Library staff and board members; Adair County Schools library/media teachers; Adair County Elementary School administration, faculty and staff; The Family Place, Family Resource Center; L.E.A.D. Adair County III members; Columbia City Police Department, Lets All Work to Fight Drug Abuse Publication; KY-ASAP (Agency for Substance Abuse Policy) local board and the Adair County Substance Abuse Coalition.

Again, thank you for making this event possible!

Ellen Zornes,
