Letter: Did Election Day concerns influence Adair gas prices? BJ Fudge sends his opinions on price of gasoline in Adair County I am not complaining for I like to take no part in non-productive, waste of motion activities. I am, however, just going to present the facts as I know them and make a few, what I believe to be, logical assumptions. Gasoline a few days before Tuesday was a $1.99.9 per gallon in Russell County while some $0.10 to $0.15 per gallon higher here in Columbia. On election day the price of fuel went to $2.28.9 and $2.29.9 per gallon here in Columbia while remaining $1.99.9 in Russell County. The prices remained that way until Friday. This weekend the prices are much the same after having come down here and having gone up in Russell County. There was no weather calamity, no spike in violence in Iraq, no saber rattling in Iran or North Korea, no refinery fire or a sudden unexpected rise in cost of operating gasoline fueling stations in Adair County. Could it have been an effort to affect the outcome of the local election in some fashion? Many people say that Republicans are more business friendly than Democrats. If so, the shift in power of our fiscal court from a 5 to 2 Democrat controlled court to a 5 to 2 Republican controlled court should be a pretty competent indicator that the oil companies once again got their way. Could it have been that the people in Russell County were coming over here shopping at our grand plaza and the oil companies were just encouraging those shoppers to go back home to buy their fuel out of sympathy for Russell County businesses? Could it be that there was a breakdown in communication between the gasoline distributors and all the fueling stations in Russell County and they actually lost money for those three days? I know you are like me and hope for those stations in Russell County that this was not the situation. Could it have been that the six major outlets here in Adair County could have made $0.30 per gallon extra profit for their distributor-owners? (If we assume, and I have no idea, that each outlet sells 5,000 gallons per day which would be 30,000 gallons per day. At $0.30 extra profit per gallon that is $9,000 dollars extra per day and $27,000 extra for the three days.) Since the oil companies will not give us a reason for their actions for having higher prices in Adair County then I suppose that we will be left to our own devises and pick one of the above. I for one tend to believe that voter manipulation is the reason for this grand conspiracy. Whichever you choose they still have $27,000 of our money in their pockets. Incidently, they can charge whatever they want as long as there is no declared emergency. We have but one recourse; buy our gasoline somewhere else every time we are out of town. Don't buy from a station owned by a price-gouging distributor. We'll teach them to manipulate our elections. -Billy Joe Fudge This story was posted on 2006-11-12 06:20:41
