Election 2006: The winners in Adair County wide races

The WINNERS of CONTESTED COVERAGE : Ann Melton, Adair County Judge Executive; Sheriff, Ralph Curry; Jailer, William "Bug" Knight. UNCONTESTED RACES: County Attorney, Jennifer Hutchinson-Corbin; PVA, Willie M. Feese; County Court Clerk, Shelia Blair; Circuit Court Clerk, Dennis Loy; County Coroner, Rick Willis; and Surveyor, Mark McKinney.

Ann Melton made history tonight, becoming the first woman in Adair County history to be elected Adair County Judge Executive.

In doing so. she brought the occupancy of the county wide offices closer to gender equity, with three women now in leadership roles in the County Judge's office, the County Attorney post, and continuing a legacy in the office of Adair County Court Clerk.



But the race was fairly close:

The votes was: Ann Melton, 3,741, for 54.01%; Terry Farris, 3,185, for 45.99%.
Melton and Farris each carried 8 precincts. Melton received a clear majority in the absentee total, with 502 votes to 163.

Sheriff's race very close

In the race for sheriff, former Sheriff Ralph Curry will be returning to the office with a close win over incumbent Sheriff Steve Cheatham.

The vote was Ralph Curry, 3,573, for 51.87%; to Steve Cheatham's 3,316 votes, for 48.13%.
Curry carried 10 precincts and the absentees; Cheatham carried six precincts.

Jailer Knight gets 71.59% of the vote to win re-election

Adair County Regional Jailer William "Bug" Knight won by a margin of almost three to one in defeating his challenger, Joe Collins.


The vote was William "Bug" Knight, 4,747 for 71.59% of the vote; Joe Collins received 1,834 votes, for 28.41%
Knight carried all precincts and the absentees in cruising to victory.

Unopposed vote totals

In the unopposed races:
  • Jennifer Hutchinson-Corbin received 4,524 votes to be re-elected as Adair County Attorney
  • Shelia Blair received 4,552 votes to be elected Adair County Court Clerk, succeeding Ann Melton

  • Dennis Loy received 5,024 votes in his unopposed race to be relected Adair County Circuit Court Clerk

  • Willie Matt "Junior" Feese, polled 4,416 votes to be re-elected Adair County Property Valuation Administrator.

  • Rick Wilson received 4,629 votes to be re-elected coroner

  • and Mike McKinney received 4,384 votes in his race to be re-elected county surveyor

Ann Melton made Adair County history Tuesday night, November 7, 2006, as the vote count made her the first women to ever be elected Adair County Judge Executive. Celebrating with her is her daughter, Katy, a student at Adair County High School.

Election 2006: Knifley count arrives

Sheriff of the Election at Knifley Precinct, Darrell Baker arrived after dark with the returns from the voting at the Knifley fire station. Baker found himself in a queue of workers from 4-5 other precincts when he arrived.
