By George Kolbenschlag, Columbia Rotary Club

Eight cars raced in the "First Annual*" Lindsey Wilson College Soap Box Derby, in front of a great turnout of spectators both from the college and the surrounding community.

The event was sponsored by Lindsey Wilson College Rotaract and the Columbia Rotary Club.

Of the eight entrants, two were in the junior level and six were in the college level. They ran three heats each.

Olivia Gifford was overall winner in the Pink Panther. The complete list of winners is as follows:
  • Collegiate professionals 1st place: Olivia Gifford in n the Pink Panther car. Olivia is from Somerset and a veterinary student at UK

  • Collegiate professionals 2nd place: Andrew Parson in the Red Bull car. Andrew Parson is a LWC student

  • Young Guns 1st place: Sean Keltner in the green alligator car. Sean is from Columbia, KY

Rotaract is an international student organization affiliated with Rotary International. They have chapters at many colleges and universities throughout the world. Lindsey Wilson Rotaract has been very active this year.

Many local community businesses and organizations helped, including:

Fizz's Bike Shop, First Realty and Auction, Sign AmericaCircle R,A-1 Auto Parts,Curves Fitness,Friedman Jewelry of Campbellsville,Wal-Mart of Columbia and Wal-Mart of Campbellsville,Hallmark of Columbia, Wendy's of Columbia,Fiesta Mexico,NAPAAuto Parts,First National Bank, Don Franklin Ford, Century 21 Smith Realty Group, Patriot Sports, 92.7 The WAVE, 93.5 WAIN, Adair County EMS, M&W Milling, Duo-County Communications, Red Bull North America. The crowd was large (as we say in Adair County--there were several) and they were very enthusiastic.

Plans are already underway for next year's race.
My style book says there is no such thing as the "first annual." It can't be an annual event until it happens more than once--but I'm willing to overlook that. -George Kolbenschlag.
