TRAGEDY at KNIFLEY. Two die in early morning house fire

Update, 2:18pm, Friday, October 13, 2006.
Two photos accompany this story
An early morning tragedy on Elkhorn Road, just west of the KY 551 and KY 76 Crossroads, Knifley, KY, took the lives of two people.

The victims have been identified as Laura M. Gadberry (not Davis, as earlier listed) and Todd Judd, residents of the house, bystanders said. The positive identification will come after an autopsy is done in Louisville. A Kentucky State Polilce Spokesperson said that others, at least two, were in the house at the time of the fire.

Knifley Area Volunteer Fire Department (KAVFD) Chief Jackie Perkins said that his personnel answered the alarm at 3:00am, Thursday morning, October 12, 2006.

By 7:00am, the Adair County Fire Department, Columbia, KY; State Fire Marshall Charles Sparks, the Adair County Coroner's office, State Police Arson Investigator Alex Wesley, and Kentucky State Police Detective Alex Wesley were on the scene.

This morning, traffic was stopped from just east of the scene west to the KAVFD building, with only first response vehicles allowed passage.

A somber mood surrounded the busy activity of the first responders as community members, friends and family of the deceased comforted each other, the way Knifleyans always do in troubled times. KAVFD Chaplain Bill Warren, pastor of the Lighthouse Tabernacle in Knifley moved from group to group to try to render comfort, to help cope with the tragic situation.

The house, owned by R.C. Gabehart, was completely razed. A police scene tape limited access by anyone other than officials; not even close family members were allowed to enter as officials prepared to take the remains to Louisville for an autopsy.

According to a Post 15, Kentucky State Police Report, one person was arrested for public intoxication at the scene. The Adair Sheriff's Office said that the arrest was made by Deputy Tommy Corbin, and that the individual was lodged in the Adair County Regional Jail, charged only with alcohol intoxication.

The KSP report said that, in addition to Detective Alex Wesley, the KSP's Detective Kevin Hunt, Adair County Sheriff's Office, and State Fire Marshal's office are continuing the investigation.
