The Art of Ike Moody at Tom Chaney's A COLUMBIAMAGAZINE.COM CULTURE and ENLIGHTENMENT FEATURE The ART of IKE MOODY By Tom Chaney The Easy Money Poetry Society and The Bookstore in Horse Cave present the Art of Ike Moody. The exhibit is on view in The Bookstore, 111 Water Street, Horse Cave, KY. It started Friday, October 5, 2006 and it runs through the month of October. Ike Moody is a self-taught artist whose original and powerful work has captured the imagination of people across the country. Much of his work features life in the federal prison where he has been incarcerated for more than six years. Moody makes use of the limited media available to him in the prison: ink, chalk, some acrylic, and a unique use of crayon - "smashies" he calls these works. Several of his works are "contours" - putting pen to paper and completing the piece without lifting the pen. His work, including many commissioned pieces, has been purchased throughout the United States. Moody's art has been shown at numerous galleries. It is on permanent display at The Gallery in Lexington, Kentucky and at IkeMoody.com The show at The Bookstore features contours, mixed media, and acrylic works whose subject matter includes scenes from prison life, portraits of his fellow inmates, with several evincing the Finsteresque technique of including written comment within the piece itself. Ike has collaborated with his father, Dr. Dwight A. Moody, Dean of the Chapel at Georgetown College, on a book The Other Side of Oddville: Stories on American Religion and Everyday Life. The elder Moody's book is a collection of short essays which "transports the reader into the realm of life's rhythms and everyday surprises." The son's art provides the illustrations for cover, frontispiece, and chapter separations. Reviewers have noted that the father and son's learning and growing together from Ike's "sad journey" makes for a meaningful literary experience. Ike Moody's art is on view at The Bookstore during the month of October - Monday through Saturday 7:00am CT until closing and Sunday from 1:00pm CT.
