Adair Arts Council decides to hold Historic Christmas Open House By Linda Waggener The Adair Arts Council met Thursday, October 5, at the Trabue Russell House on Jamestown Street and made a few changes in structure and also decided to go ahead with plans for the Historic Open House on December 2. Saturday, December 2, the day of the annual Christmas in Columbia, will find the Trabue-Russell House open to the public. Ever since the May meeting where Mayor Bell invited the heritage interests of the Arts Council to anchor at the Trabue House, the arts council has met there and brainstormed about how to promote it to the public and share the wonder of Adair County's history that has been donated to the house from residents over the years. The committment was made at the meeting for a beginning event on the 2nd and everyone who wants to work with the group to make it happen is invited to participate. Meeting times/style updated for smoother operations The group voted to move future meeting times up to 6 p.m. so that more could attend. The group also voted to incorporate food at each meeting so that the starvation factor won't hurt attendance. Since people are so pressed for time, it was decided at Thursday night's meeting to recruit two volunteers to serve in each role: faciilitator, recorder, reminder, treasurer and refreshments, to share the work of keeping the organization going. Decisions will be voted on by the members present at each meeting. (This uses the Berea College Brushy Fork Institute's recommended less-formal, consensus-style for meetings. It also keeps to the member-run organizational style as explained by J.D. Zornes at our last meeting to finalize the incorporation papers for the Arts Council). Crystal Bennett, ACHS Arts Club President, volunteered to serve in a leadership role and the search is on for more like her so that there is a senior and junior officer in each area of need. It is believed that this will also help span the work of the Adair Arts Council across the generations so that leadership stays in continuous development. From 5 to 15 board members will be always needed to work on growing and guiding the organization. At present we have a dozen and room for more. Board members will meet at the Trabue House quarterly, time TBA.
