CU to present works of Adair County artist Cora Renfro

Cora Renfro, an alumnae artist of Campbellsville University, will haveher artwork showcased in the Gosser Fine Arts Center Gallery until Oct.12.

A reception will be in her honor at the alumni art exhibit duringCampbellsville University's Homecoming festivities Saturday, Oct. 7 at10 a.m. Renfro's show will feature the use of watercolors and pastels.Her works on display include oils, watercolors and pencil ranging fromportraits to religious subjects.



"I have been so excited about thewatercolor paintings I've been doing this year," she said. "In thesepaintings I love combining realism and abstraction with lots of colorand design. My subjects come from the Bible and my inspiration and helpfrom the Lord.

"I like to quote, 'Art is a collaboration between God andthe artist, and the less the artist does the better. (Andre Gide).' Ialso receive lots of encouragement from my family and friends. Most ofmy artwork is religious, and there are some portraits. I like to exploredifferent areas with my artwork. My artwork depicts realistic andsometimes non-realistic ideas I have. I like variety in my artwork,"said Renfro.

Renfro is two years into retirement from the thirty-fiveyear career in teaching. She graduated with a bachelor of science degree in art fromCampbellsville University in 1969.

She was the first person in CUhistory to graduate with a bachelor of art degree with art area andteaching emphasis. She began as an elementary art teacher in the RussellCounty school system for two years. She then spent the next 33 years inthe Taylor County school system. She taught art at all grade levelscompleting her tenure as an art instructor at Taylor County High Schoolfor 21 years.

During this time she continued to hone her skills in avariety of mediums. She sought to share with her many students, her lovefor art and to help them develop their own talents. Renfro also receiveda master's degree in educational counseling and a Rank 1 title ineducational counseling as well.

"I love the fact the Lord has given methis talent. It is a talent that I have a strong passion for. I knowthat it is a passion because I get excitement and enjoyment from doingit," said Renfro.

She hopes to have a studio soon and begin extended herartistic abilities in other areas as she enjoys her retirement. Sinceretirement, Renfro has devoted her time to family, church and art. Sheis married to James Renfro and resides in the Holmes Bend area of AdairCounty near Green River Lake.

She has two children, Dwight and JaimeRenfro, who are graduates of Campbellsville University.
