Over 150 participate in Breast Cancer Awareness March

Photo(s) with story

More than 150 people participated in the inaugural Adair County Breast Cancer Awareness March, held Wednesday afternoon in Columbia.

The march began at Lindsey Wilson Colleges Catherine Wilson Center and ended in Columbia Downtown Square and featured testimonials by breast cancer survivors and their families.

Speakers included March co-organizer Ellen Zornes, and Butch Wheatley, Betty Fisher, Jim Cook, Martha Martin, Rita Melton, Peggy Lawson and others.

Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths among American women.

"We are so grateful to everyone who supported this cause, to the donors, marchers, speakers and volunteers," said Catherine Wilson Center Director Wendy Benningfield, the events co-organizer. "We are grateful to Adair County for helping us raise awareness about breast cancer.

"Today the residents of Adair County started something good, and I'm confident we will have another march next year. Today we showed our support to those who have or have had breast cancer, and we let them know they are not alone."

BACKLIGHTED PINK BALLOONS and the official Breast Cancer Awareness pink tees gave the Adair Annex quadrant of the Square an even brighter look at noon today, Wednesday, October 4, 2006. The group walked from the Catherine B. Wilson Center on Lindsey Hill to this site. Dr. Wendy Benningfield, head of the Catherine B. Wilson Center, was emcee. Several speakers, led off by Butch Wheatley, spoked. Mr. Wheatley told the crowd that his sister-in-law had just died of cancer, in Illinois, and he was on the way to her funeral. Another sister, he said, is one of 10 survivors in a new treatment program which began with 38 participants. Wheatley said it was prayers which kept her going.
