Friends of Library regular monthly meeting Sept. 28, 2006 report Charlotte Chandler is interim President of FoL; attorney meets with group to start applicationfor 501 (c)3 corporation. Over 35 have joined the organization so far With one photograph Charlotte Chandler was selected interim president of the Adair County Friends of the Library at its regular meeting Thursday, September 28, 2006 at the Adair County Friends of the Library. Fourteen members were on hand for the meeting, at which other interim officers were selected, first volunteer projects were circulated, and very importantly, work was begun to have the group incorporated as a 501 (c)3 non-profit group. Other interim officers named The other interim officers include Vicky Compton, treasurer; Candice Robertson, vice-president; and Martha Blankenship, secretary. The group already had nominating and bylaw committees, which included June Parson, Martha Blankenship, Charlotte Chandler and Vonnie Kolbenschlag. Permanent officers will be elected after the Internal Revenue Service approves the application for the 501 (c)3 standing. This should take a minimum of six weeks, the attorney told the board, from the time the application is complete. The first financial challenge for the group is the $300 filing fee which must be paid to the IRS. The importance of the 501 (c)3 standing is that it allows easy tax deductions for contributions to the Friends of the LIbrary. Most recently, in Adair County, the Green River Animal Welfare League (GRAWL), attained the special status. The attorney who successfully made their application is representing the Friends group. The attorney's opinion is that the Friends application, as with most Friends' applications are, will be approved by the IRS. The application will include a 3-year proposed budget, outline of proposed fund-raising activities, and a mission statement, the group was told. The local FoL will have monthly meetings at which business will be conducted by the board, but will always be open to the full membership. Board members will be elected at annual meetings. At the meeting, a directory of members was circulated with 36 members already on the roll. Yearly dues for membership are $15 for a family, $10 for an individual, $5.00 for youth not included in a family membership; and no charge for honorary membership for those 12 and under. Friends already have requests from the libary director Adair County Public Library Director Lee Ann Jessee circulated a wish list for volunteer work at the library. The list is as follows: Volunteer Work
The low dues for membership are designed to bring a large number of people into the group. The Friends hope that everyone in the county will join. Membership information is available at the Adair County Public Library and at the two Mite-as-Well Shoppes. This story was posted on 2006-09-30 15:47:29
