Rep. Rogers gets money to promote Bear, other wildlife tourism

Funds from ARC will help develop wildlife-based economic development plan
U.S. Representative Harold "Hal" Rogers (KY-05) has announced that the Appalachian Regional Commission is awarding $60,000 to the Southern and Eastern Kentucky Tourism Development Association (SEKTDA).

These funds will be used to develop a wildlife-based economic development plan for eastern Kentucky and support the creation of seven new tourism-related businesses.

"In the past few years by taking PRIDE in our environment, we've made impressive strides in improving the natural habitat for fish, birds, deer, elk, and black bear," Rogers said. "Now we can use these efforts to expand our tourism base and invite companies and entrepreneurs to showcase southern and eastern Kentucky to the world. Through SEKTDA's leadership, these funds will help point us in the right direction."

Columbia and Adair County are represented on the board of SEKTDA by Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sue Stivers. Though not now in Rep. Rogers district, Adair County has continued to benefit from many public works projects initiated by him.

The economic plan will identify existing assets, develop trails, and wildlife viewing areas as well as forge partnerships with state and federal resource agencies, local governments, Kentucky Coal Association, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF). In addition to ARC funds, $15,000 has been provided by SEKTDA, $2,000 from RMEF, and $2,000 from the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources. This brings the total project funding to $77,000.
