JASON HARMON: Midwife birthing fees

Response to recent request for information on fee schedule for midwives on Burton Ridge ca 1940s. Another midwife. His recent whereabouts
Ed,I am not sure what charges Sarah Ellen had for birthing. I will have to ask some older relatives. She delivered my dad (we think), paternal grandpa, maternal grandmother and a host of cousins, uncles and aunts.

There is a good chance that she delivered Peewee. I don't think she stopped delivering babies until the last year or so before her death. That would mean she was about 80 at the time of her retirement.

Mary Louisa Streeval was also a midwife in the area. This woman was the mother of Peewee's godfather, Tandy Austin Streeval.

On another note, I recently arrived home after a week long trip to Tokyo and Hiroshimo, Japan. I got some great pictures while I was there.

This clarifies part of the mystery of your recent whereabouts. Hope you'll share a picture or so. Thanks for the information. Hope you'll keep looking into the obstetrics fee schedule for midwifery, Burton RIdge and environs, ca 1940. In the meantime, we'll assume that they charged 25 cents, regardless of the baby's appearance. Readers are awaiting the story of Pete McQueary, which you've indicated is almost ready. Thanks. -Ed Waggener
