LWC students hold public reading of Constitution

By Emily Harlan, Lindsey Wilson College

Lindsey Wilson College students took part in the second annual national reading of the U.S. Constitution on Monday, September 18, 2006, in the Cralle Student Union Building.

Students enrolled in the "U.S. Constitutional Law" class each read sections of the document, which took about one hour to read in its entirety. Across the country students participated in the nationwide commemoration of the adoption of the Constitution, which occurred on Sept. 17, 1787.

Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Jane Baxter Jones organized the reading because she hopes it increases students' appreciation of the document.

"The Constitution is such a fundamental document of American citizenship and government that I believe good citizens should be familiar with it," Jones said. "College students are getting ready to go our in the world and conduct their government in the future and need to learn these basics.

"By reading the document every year I hope the people on campus gain a stronger appreciation of its importance in all our lives."
