LWC to host international student festival, Sept. 23, 2006

By Emily Harlan, Lindsey Wilson writer
Colorful outfits, the aromas of ethnic foods and the sounds of native songs will attract students and community members to Lindsey Wilson College on Saturday, September 23, 2006.

Lindsey Wilson will host "International Student Festival and A World to Experience" from 10am to noon CT on that day. The event will be in W.W. Slider Humanities Center Recital Hall. It is free and open to the public.

"The International Student Festival and A World to Experience" showcases the cultures of Lindsey Wilson's international students. Students will dress in native clothes, cook native food, present displays about their home countries, sing, dance and talk about their backgrounds.

This school year, Lindsey Wilson has 97 international students from 40 countries. Nations from Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America are all represented.

The programs benefit foreign and American students, as well as community members, according to Coordinator of International Student Services Suzy McAlpine.

"While international students adjustment to American society is very important, it is equally important to show their origins and identities," McAlpine said. "Our programs make up a special day for international students to celebrate and enjoy sharing their heritage and differences, as well as their similarities."

Cesario Dos Santos, a psychology senior from the Southeast Asian nation of East Timor, has participated in every festival since he arrived as a freshman.

"It is very interesting to meet people from different countries and see their perspectives and values," Dos Santos said. "Learning something new makes you more open-minded.

"When students participate in the programs, they dont have prejudices. Students realize we are all the same, we just see the world in different ways."

Dos Santos said he encourages American students to attend the festival.

"The purpose of the day is for American students and locals to participate, as well as international students," he said. "Involvement is very important, and students might learn something new."

"The International Student Festival and A World to Experience" is one way Lindsey Wilson helps international students adjust to college life in America. The colleges international student office hosts a three-day orientation, an international student club, shopping trips, National International Education Week, free tutoring sessions and a host family program.

This year, 33 Lindsey Wilson employees and 12 community members are hosting the colleges international students. Host families create a home a away from home for international students, including introducing them to local cuisine, providing transportation to area locations and offering support.

Lindsey Wilson alumna Nora Williams coordinates the host family program. A former international student from Finland, Williams said the host familys role is vital to international students.

"International students are far from home," Williams said. "They might feel homesick and need someone to be their friend and mentor as they adjust to American culture.

"Lindsey Wilson does well in providing programs so the international students feel special. The college gives them a chance to educate others about their culture, language and country."
