Tourism representatives gather in Burkesville

Sue Stivers, Adair County Tourism Director, was in Burkesville Friday morning where a SEKTDA plaque was presented in honor of her late dear friend Phyllis Smith who had been a guiding force behind the new mural there. The two became close working with U.S. Representative Hal Rogers' initiative to develop and strengthen income to southern and eastern Kentucky from tourism.

In attendance were: Major General Paul Smith accepting the plaque in his late wife's honor, National Scenic Byways Director making the presentation Jeff Crowe, Sue Stivers, mural artist Pat Ritter, SEKTDA Community Development Director Van Back, Tourism Outreach Director Theresa Russell, Cumberland County's Heartland Waterways Corridor representative Laura Lee Butler, writer Margery Henderson Fuller, and Hazel Hagan accompanying Gen. Smith.

This SEKTDA update also includes the news that Southern and Eastern Kentucky Scenic Byways have received outdoor tourism information gazebos like the one in the accompanying photo from TOUR Southern and Eastern Kentucky. The gazebos have been placed along each of the scenic byway routes over the past few months for a total of twenty-nine in all.

The designated byway routes are: Red River Gorge, Wilderness Road and Country Music National Scenic Byways along with the Cumberland Cultural State Scenic Byway. The gazebo locations were chosen by local tourism representatives from each county. The purpose of these outdoor structures is to entertain and inform visitors about the region, county, and byway routes.

The project is being completed in phases. Phase one was the fabrication and setup of the structures in each county. Phase two will be the three-sidedinformation panels that will be installed inside the gazebos for visitors andlocals to learn more about the county and the byway region. The final phase will be landscaping of the area surrounding each site, to make it more visiblyenticing.

Tourism representatives, judges and mayors worked very closely with the bywaysprogram director, Jeff Crowe in choosing the proper location for the structure.

The funding for these gazebos is being made possible through the efforts ofCongressman Hal Rogers and the Americas Byways Program.

TOURs mission is to promote, develop and expand the existing and potentialtourism industry throughout Southern and Eastern Kentucky in an effort tocontribute to the economic and cultural growth of the region.
