Sports: 78 Players in Columbia Open Tennis Tournament

Eleven players from Adair County are among competitors

Columbia was home to one of the areas largest tennis tournaments this past weekend, July 29 and 30th, as 78 players competed from surrounding counties in the 2006 CKTS (Central Kentucky Tennis Series) Columbia Open Tennis Tournament. Eleven of the players participating in the tournament were from Adair County.

The tournament was played at Lindsey Wilson College, the Adair County High School, and the Columbia Fairground facilities.



Matches began at 8:00am CT on Saturday morning. The last match concluded at approximately 11:00pm CT on Sunday night under the lights at the Columbia Fairgrounds.

The CKTS series began with the Columbia Open in 2003, which attracted 40 players. It has almost doubled in size since that time. Thirteen new members were signed during the Columbia Open tournament. Currently the CKTS has 108 total members in the Central Kentucky area.


Tournament results were as follows:
Men's Open Singles:
1st place- Tyler Matney from Russell Spring KY
2nd place- Justin Martin from Liberty KY
Men's Open B Singles:
1st place- Leony Barroso from Lawrenceburg KY
2nd place- Roger Pierce from Elizabethtown KY
Men's C Singles:
1st place- Sammy Blakeman from Greensburg KY
2nd place- Lee Stephens from Columbia KY
Boy's 18 & Under Singles:
1st place- Andy Burress from Elizabethtown KY
2nd place- Kevin Thompson from Campbellsville KY
Women's B Singles:
Rosemary Hedges - Elizabethtown To Be Determined
Kathy O'Brien - Elizabethtown
Girls 18 & Under Singles:
1st place- Jenna Sallee, Elizabethtown KY
2nd place-Abigail Thompson, Campbellsville KY
Mixed Open Doubles:
1st place- Tichaedza Chikuni (Richmond KY) andAudra Nothwehr (Columbia KY)
2nd place- Larry Milby - Campbellsville KY and Susan Emerson, Russell Springs KY
Men's Open Doubles:
1st place- Larry Milby, Campbellsville KY & Matt Coomer, Louisville KY
2nd place- Dwain Harris, Mt Vernon KY and Tyler Matny, Russell Springs KY
Men's B Doubles:
1st place- Jeff Crady, Elizabethtown KY and Andy Burress, Elizabethtown KY
2nd place- Steve Humphress, Campbellsville KY, and Don Humphress. Campbellsville KY
