Mark Twain Shrine Club makes life a lot better for Dalen Local Shriners arrange custom van gift from Kosair Charities to Dalen Robertson By Linda Waggener A few months ago Jimmy Harper, teacher at the alternative school in Russell Springs, became aware of a family's special need for custom transportation. Jimmy, being the good samaritan he is known to be around these parts, asked Amanda what he could do to help. She told him that with her son Dalens illness, transportation was the problem she'd been praying about for a long time. Mark Twain Shriners learned that Kosair had a van available Jimmy brought that need back to his brothers in the Mark Twain Shrine Club and it was discovered that Kosair Charities had a van they were going to give to the Masonic Homes of Kentucky. We know all of those folks really well and made our case about the family in southcentral Kentucky who had a great need for it. "The Kosair Charities Board of Directors gladly answered our request," Mr. Flowers said. Robert Flowers, fellow Charter Member of the Mark Twain Shrine Club, and communications helper between Mark Twain and Kosair notes the van is from Kosair Charities to the Mark Twain Shrine Club to the Robertson family. And it is even more special because it is being done on Dalen's birthday. Because of the unique situation here in Kentucky, Kosair Charities do more than sponsor Shriners Hospitals Kosair Charities not only sponsor Shriners Hospitals but they fund Norton Kosair Childrens Hospital to the tune of about four million dollars a year. We have the best pediatric doctors in the country because of this. It doesn't matter if a family has insurance or not, the children are treated because Kosair Charities picks up the tab. In addition to that, because they are completely independent, Kosair has the ability to do things across the state just like the addition we did on the Hutchison house. All the funding for the van came from Kosair Charities down through Mark Twain Shrine Club. Kosair Charities largest charitable organization in state Jim Fisher is the Assistant Rabban who will be the Potentate of Kosair Shrine in two years, said, "Kosair Shrine, which controls Kosair Charities, was organized back about the turn of the century and they are the largest charitable organization in the state of Kentucky with a two-hundred-fifty-two million dollar endowment, allowing us a large working allowance from the interest alone." Everyone is asked to give generously on Friday afternoon, June 30, when the local Mark Twain Shrine Club will be having its semi-annual Road Block. All monies collected go to Kosair Charities and come back in ways just like this to help neighbors in need. Officers are Jim Flowers President; Jason Corbin, Vice President: Joseph Flowers, Secretary; and Freddie Rowe, Treasurer. 95% of Mark Twain membership is from Adair County The Mark Twain Shrine Club has a 95% Adair County membership. Other members are from surrounding counties or come from as far away as Glasgow and Louisville. The club is a designated branch of the Kosair Temple, Louisville, KY.The group meets monthly on each first Tuesday at Edgewood. Chef Robert Flowers always cooks dinner with assistance from Bobby Dean Loy and Jason Cox. This story was posted on 2006-06-20 07:39:48
