Rep. Rogers gets $3 million in Federal budget for I-66

Money will help development of the first Interstate Highway through Columbia, KY

U.S. Representative Hal Rogers (R. KY-District 5) has included $3 million in the federal transportation budget for continued development of Interstate 66 in Kentucky.

The highway, when built, will incorporate or roughly parallel the Louie B. Nunn Parkway, which passes through Columbia, KY. It would be Adair County's first true interstate highway. Though none of the money in this appropriation is for Adair County, it does move the project along.

Rep. Rogers cites safety factor

"It is well documented that the vast majority of traffic related deaths in Kentucky occur on rural, non-Interstate roads," Rogers said. "Improving our highway system is absolutely critical to saving lives and protecting the traveling public." He added, "Interstate 66 will provide a safe link to communities in southern and eastern Kentucky, many of which currently have limited access to major highways."

Much of the work will be in Somerset area

Rogers secured $1 million for construction of the northern bypass connector to I-66 in Somerset and $1.5 million for continued development of the I-66 corridor between Somerset and London. An additional $500,000 is included for continued development of I-66 in Pike County. Since 1998, Rogers has secured $70 million in targeted federal funding for development of I-66 across Kentucky.

$470 million goes for Appalachian Highway Development System

The bill also includes $470 million for the Appalachian Highway Development System that is targeted to improve the distressed region's highways. Kentucky is slated to receive $68.5 million of those funds.

Money for these projects is included in the 2007 budget for the U.S. Department of Transportation, which was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives on June 14. Rogers works to provide funding for Kentucky transportation projects in his role as a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee.
