24 future Methodist leaders attend LWC pastoral school One common goal: to deepen their involvement in The United Methodist Church. LWC photo of pastors accompanies this article. By Duane Bonifer, Director Lindsey Wilson Public Relations Department COLUMBIA, KY. They came from all over the country and from a diversity of backgrounds, but the two dozen men and women who were on Lindsey Wilson College's campus last week had one thing in common: to deepen their involvement in The United Methodist Church. The United Methodist Church Kentucky Annual Conference held its License for Pastoral Ministry School from May 21-27 at Lindsey Wilson. It was the seventh time in the last eight years the school has been at the college. The men and women who attended the school ranged in age from their early 20s to middle age, and they were all in the incipient stage of their service as clergy. School prepares pastors for the people "In a nutshell, the school is about preparing pastors for the people," said Mary Lou Stephens of Richmond First United Methodist Church, who served as one of the school's deans. All of the school's students had been members of The United Methodist Church for at least five years and had spent a couple years in a leadership role. And although the school is designed for emerging leaders in Kentucky Methodism, two of this year's 24 students were from outside conferences, including one who traveled from Arizona. Blessing is sharing United Methodist theology "The blessing of the week is sharing our United Methodist theology, doctrine and understanding," said the Rev. Ken Jesse, pastor of Hardinsburg United Methodist Church and the school's other dean. The school included guest speakers who led sessions on issues new pastors will face in their appointed churches. The participants also learned about Wesleyan history and theology, planning worship services, conducting weddings and funerals, personal faith renewal, and leadership skills. In the evening, the students attended Bible studies and worship services. When the students left the weeklong program, they were prepared to serve the conference's smaller churches. Some of the school's graduates will go on to seminary to begin the journey of becoming an ordained minister within the church. And Lindsey Wilson officials said they were glad the college once again played a part in developing the church's future leaders. Dr. Swan: Pleased to have License for Pastoral Ministry at LWC "We are always exceptionally pleased to have our License for Pastoral Ministry School at Lindsey Wilson," said Lindsey Wilson Dean of the Chapel Terry Swan. "The whole college is blessed by their presence and excited by the prospects of having these outstanding people become leaders in the church." Along with Lindsey Wilson Campus Chaplain Troy Elmore, Swan served on the faculty of this year's school "Lindsey Wilson was founded in 1903 by the Methodist Church, and we are glad the college still has a vibrant role in the church today," Swan said.
