He came to Kentucky from Tennessee, where he was most recently the senior pastor of the Brentwood United Methodist Church, a 5,000-plus congregation in the Tennessee Conference. King's appointment to Brentwood represented a major cross-racial appointment in the Tennessee Conference as he was the first African American pastor for that congregation. From 1996 to 1999, Bishop King was District Superintendent of the Murfreesboro District in the Tennessee Conference. King was born in Ashland, Alabama, and he was ordained deacon in the Central Alabama Conference in 1970 and elder in the same conference in 1972. The co-author of 365 Meditations for Men, King earned a bachelor of arts degree from Clark (Ga.) University and a master of divinity from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta.
